How Wordle works
Word is a vocabulary game in which players have six guesses to guess a five-letter word. Once you enter a guess, the individual letters within the word you entered will appear in different colors. Each color has a different meaning.
- Green: The letter entered is 100% correct: the correct letter in the correct space.
- Yellow: The letter you entered is in the correct word, but you placed it in the wrong space.
- Gray: The letter entered is not used in today’s Wordle’s answer, so it’s time to go back to the drawing board.
The goal is to guess the correct word in as few tries as possible. If you don’t get the answer in six tries, you lose.
Best Wordle Starting Words
You might be able to jump right into Wordle, but really victorious It’s another story. You only get a total of six attempts to solve the daily puzzle, and there is only one puzzle per day. If you can’t solve it in that many tries, you have to wait until the next day to try again with the next word. If you want to maximize your chances of solving your daily brain teaser, here are some tried and true tips and the best starting words for Wordle.
The most important guess is the first. You want to get as many green and yellow letters here as possible to help guide your future guesses. The most important letters to start with are the vowels (A, E, I, O, and U), so words that contain as many of these as possible are a great start. Some popular initial words that people have had good luck with are “adieu,” “media,” “arise,” and “radio.” Just make sure you don’t choose a word with double letters, so you get as much new information as possible.
Your second word, assuming the first gave you a good starting point, should start to lean more on common consonants like R, S, and T. The best ones we’ve seen here are “stern,” “irate.” ” and “atone.” This is where things will vary since each day is a different solution, but you never want to reuse letters from a previous round that were greyed out. It might make you think a little harder to find a word, but there’s nothing to be gained by using a letter you know isn’t in the answer.
Finally, keep these words in mind. can have a duplicate card. These words are the most difficult to understand, but they are not very common either. If you get to the final round or two and are stumped, that’s a great thing to keep in mind.
And remember: starting in November 2022, plural words that simply add an “is” or “s” to a singular word will no longer be valid answers; eg “ships” and “foxes” can no longer be a Wordle response. Other plurals such as “mushrooms” or “geese” will continue to be valid. Fundamentally, every word in the five-letter dictionary is still valid for guess and get yellow or green letters from, but that doesn’t mean they’re available as a future fix.
